SEMP3104 M. (Sempronius) (not in RE) (Rutilus)

Career

  • Proconsul? 100 to 1 Asia (Broughton MRR II Appendix 2) Expand
    • Named as Procos. on coins of some Col(onia) Iul(ia) in Asia Minor (Grant, From Imperium to Auctoritas 238ff.). Grant identifies him with M. Sempronius Rutilus, a Legate under Caesar in Gaul in 52, and suggests that the colony was Lystra and that Dolabella may have named him governor of Asia. This is improbable since his title would be Legate. See Magie, Roman Rule in Asia Minor 2.1324, note 41. (Broughton MRR II Appendix 2)
    • Procos. in Asia, uncertain date. Delete the cognomen Rufus in MRR 2.481, and Index, 616, and substitute the cognomen Rutilus, which has been read, along with the title Procos., by M. Grant on the coins of a Col(onia) Iu(lia) in Asia Minor (FITA 238-242). He may possibly be identified with M. Sempronius Rutilus (82), a legatus of Caesar in 52 (MRR 2.239), but the title proconsul is against considering him, as Grant suggests, an appointee of Dolabella in 44-43. Syme suggests that he may have been governor of Cilicia after Volcatius Tullus (45-44; see MRR 3.310) in 44 before Dolabella came. (RS, CP) (Broughton MRR III)
